Skull Cave

The origin of the Milne Bay Province skull caves is shrouded in mystery.

One story has it that the skulls are battle trophies. Head-hunting and cannibalism were prevalent in pre-missionary times.

The other explanation is that in the distant past villagers honored deceased family members by preserving their skulls in these caves.

Whatever the true story, it is quite a sight to witness haphazard piles of hundreds of skulls in these underground caves.
