Whale Tale

As a Humpback Whale dives it often displays its fluke, or tail. Average breadth of the tail is 15 feet.

Humpback Whales are no longer physically tagged for identification. There is no need, as the black and white pattern on the tail of a whale is as distintive as a human fingerprint. Photography is now used to positively identify individual whales.
