Humpback Mother and Calf

Mother Humpback and calf are now swimming side by side.

Female Humpbacks average 45 feet in length, and weigh an average of 30 tons.
Mother does not eat during the months on the Silver Bank. The warm, protected waters well suited to nurturing the calf are nutrient-poor. The mother must produce 50 gallons of milk for the calf every day. She loses one third of her body weight in the process.
