Bryce Canyon was set aside as a national monument in 1923, and was established as a national park in 1928. The Paiute Indians believed that the red, orange, pink, yellow, and cream-colored limestone hoodoos were Legend People, birds, and animals that were turned to stone. The canyon was named after Mormon pioneer Ebenezer Bryce.
