Timbisha is the Shoshone Indian word for Death Valley. Much of the park is the Shoshone Natural and Cultural Preservation Area. The gold mining ghost town of Rhyolite lies just outside the park boundary. Borax of twenty mule team fame was also an important mineral mined here. Badwater Basin is the lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet below sea level.
