Salt Pans, Bonaire Salt, though a simple commodity, was the root of war and conflict among European countries vying for control of Bonaire. The Dutch took control of Bonaire over four centuries ago.
An old slave hut stands on the outskirts of the Salt Pans. Slavery was abolished in Bonaire in 1863, followed by a decline in the salt industry.
The Hilma Hooker made port in Kralendijk in 1984 after suffering rudder trouble during her voyage. While docked at the Town Pier it was discovered that she was really a drug-runner, and her cargo of 25,000 pounds of marijuana was seized.
