An old slave hut stands on the outskirts of the Salt Pans. Slavery was abolished in Bonaire in 1863, followed by a decline in the salt industry.
The Hilma Hooker made port in Kralendijk in 1984 after suffering rudder trouble during her voyage. While docked at the Town Pier it was discovered that she was really a drug-runner, and her cargo of 25,000 pounds of marijuana was seized.
Sam Rice explores the wreck of the Hilma Hooker. After being seized by the authorities, the Hilma Hooker was abandoned by her owners, and fell to neglect. She was towed from the Town Pier and anchored offshore. Five days later she sank in 100 feet of water.
